Encryption and unlocking

One of the unique features of the Clinical Analytics system is the ability to drill down to patient-level data. The feature allows analysts to see exactly what happened in a particular case and discern where improvements can be made.

Patient-level data is PHI (Protected Health Information), so the Clinical Analytics environment encrypts specific data fields to provide an additional layer of security for you and your patients; these fields cannot be viewed until the data is decrypted or unlocked. If you have the encryption key and password for your facility, you can unlock the data and drill down to the patient level. You can also remove the encryption key and password.

Any user whose Role for System Administration is Basic or Health System Administrator can view PHI. Users whose Role for System Administration is blank cannot view PHI.

There are several ways to drill into the patient-level data, and this guide takes you through each of them.

Permission to unlock

If you cannot see the Unlock icon, you do not have access to the feature.

Contact your system administrator for access; users must have Basic or Health System Coordinator permissions for System Administration to have unlocking privileges. See User permissions for more information.

After you have access and can see the Unlock icon, complete the Request unlocking privileges instructions to set up your encryption key.

Grant permission to unlock

Clinical Analytics Administrators can grant unlocking privileges to users. To find out how, see Grant unlocking privileges.
